About Us

Department of Writing

The Department of Writing is the home of UAA’s Written Communication General Education Requirements (GERs), pre-GER developmental coursework in academic writing and reading, and related support classes for multilingual students.

The Department of Writing’s mission is to prepare students to read and analyze texts critically and to communicate effectively in academic and professional settings. We believe in our students and we believe they should be engaged, challenged, and supported in their coursework as they develop as readers, writers, and thinkers.

Courses in the Department of Writing begin with the basics of written communication and end with opportunities for students to participate in academic and professional discourse communities reflective of their own fields of study.

Writing, reading, and critical thinking form the core of the undergraduate experience and are highly valued in every professional field. Consequently, with over 2,000 students, our department is UAA’s largest. Our caring, expert faculty engage students as writers and scholars and invite them to contribute their voices to crucial academic, professional, and civic conversations.
