On Wednesday, Nov. 13, UAA Chancellor Cathy Sandeen signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Antti Syväjärvi, rector of the University of Lapland. As an Arctic university in Rovaniemi, Finland, the University of Lapland has many things in common with the University of Alaska Anchorage, such as membership in UArctic. (University of Alaska Fairbanks is also a member.)

UArctic, also known as the University of the Arctic, is a network of colleges, research institutes and other organizations dedicated to educational opportunities and research in the North. During her visit to Rovaniemi, Chancellor Sandeen and Rector Syväjärvi discussed collaborations in education, art and law. Current collaborations between UAA and the University of Lapland include art, social work, education and natural sciences.
