1000 Origami Cranes Project

One Thousand Origami Cranes:  11th Year Remembrance of the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami 

Presented by University of Alaska Anchorage and Randolph Macon College

This year marks the 11th year since our Alaskan and very own alumnus Montgomery Dickson perished in  the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami on March 11, 2011. Monty taught English to local children  in Rikuzentakata, Iwate prefecture, through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Taylor  Anderson, another JET from Randolph Macon College (R-MC) in Virginia, was teaching in Ishinomaki,  Miyagi prefecture. UAA and R-MC jointly present the One Thousand Origami Cranes Project this March,  as introduced below. It is an honor to work with R-MC to commemorate Taylor and Monty's dream to  become a bridge between America and Japan.  

The crane is a bird that carries deep symbolism in Japanese culture, especially as a symbol of peace and  longevity. The folding of origami cranes stems from Japanese legend, where it is said that folding one  thousand cranes will allow the granting of some wish, including that of a long life or recovery from an  illness. In modern times people often make these creations as a symbol of support and give them as gifts. 

With the symbol of peace and longevity, this joint project signifies continuing togetherness and support as  we commemorate the 11th year of the Great East Japan Disaster. 

How to Get Involved: 
  1. Prepare square origami paper the color of your choice. The suggested square paper size is  between 3×3 inches and 6×6 inches.  
  2. Make ten origami cranes following the video provided HERE. 
    • STOP before the last step and do not fold the wings downward. A set of instructional diagrams  can also be found HERE. 
  3. Stack the cranes on top of each other. You can use scotch tape or glue as needed.
  4. Hold the string of 10 origami cranes on the left side of your face as face the camera. Take your photo. See the photo requirements below.
  5. Upload your file through this Google Form Link. 
Photo requirements: 
  • Photo Size – Must be square with 600 × 600pixels. Use software such as Photoshop or  Photoshop Express to resize your photo if needed. A free online version can be found HERE.  (Upload your picture, then choose “Resize for: custom,” then type in 600 for width and height.)
  • Closely follow the template (shown below). Make sure to place your ten cranes on the left side  of the face as you face the camera. Show all ten cranes in the photo. Your face should take up  most of the left side of the frame, and the cranes should run from the top of the frame down to  the bottom. This will create the strung-together effect when we create the collage. 
  • In light of health precautions, you may wear a mask in your picture. 
  • Submission Due: 11:59 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2022.  

 Photo Size Guidelines

Final Product: 

With all collected photos, we will create a collage for the final art work. It will be published on  March 11, 2022, through various platforms, including the social media accounts and websites of  both institutions. Please check our website for information on this and other events in regard to 3.11 Commemoration.  

Note: By submitting your photo to this project, you grant University of Alaska Anchorage and  Randolph-Macon College permission to use it for the purpose of commemorating 3/11/11 or  describing commemorative events, on all its public platforms including but not limited to the  University/College’s website, social media accounts, and video pages such asYouTube.

今年で東日本大震災の津波でアラスカ大学アンカレジ校の卒業生、モントゴメリー・ディクソンが 亡くなって 11 年目を迎えます。モンティは JET プログラムの外国語指導助手として岩手県陸前高田 市に派遣され、地元の学校で英語を教えていました。この津波では、もうひとり JET の方が犠牲に なっています。バージニアのランドルフ・メーコン大学(R-MC)の卒業生で、震災当時宮城県石巻 市で英語を教えていたテイラー・アンダーソンさんです。この度、この二人の JET 青年を忍び、日 米の架け橋となるという夢を共に継いで行くべく、UAA では、R-MC と合同で以下のイベントを企 画することになりました。こぞってご参加ください。

参加方法
Step 1: 折り紙の色は自由。紙のサイズは 7.5cm × 7.5cm から 15cm × 15cm の間で選択。
Step 2: 鶴を 10 羽折る。折り方のビデオは「こちら」をクリックしてください。最後に羽の部分は 広げないこと。図解をご覧になりたい場合は「こちら」をクリックしてください。
Step 3: 10 羽の折り鶴を羽を広げないまま平らな状態で縦に束ねる。糸を通さずとも重ねることはできますが、必要な場合は、テープやのりで固定する。
Step 4: 束ねた折り鶴を顔の左側に配置して写真を撮り、この Google フォームにアップロードする。締め切り:2022 年 2 月 25 日(金曜日)アラスカ時間午後 11 時 59 分。

写真の規定:

  • 下の写真テンプレートにある画角に従い、折り鶴が顔の左側に位置するように持ち、
    羽全てがフレームに収まるように撮影する。撮影時、顔が写真の左側大半を占めるよ
    うに位置し、10 羽の折り鶴が上から下までしっかりとフレーム内に写るように設定し
    てください。
  • コロナ対策のため、マスク着用での写真撮影も可。
  • 写真のサイズは縦横ともに 600 ピクセルの正方形に設定。サイズ調整にはフォトショップ等のソフトがおすすめです。無料 Web バージョンは「こちら」をクリックしてください。
    • 写真をアップロードし、元の写真が正方形でない場合は「正方形」を選択
    • メニューから「サイズ変更:カスタム」を選択。
    • ピクセル欄に幅と高さを「600」と打ち込み、写真を縦横 600 ピクセルに調整。
    • 規定の静に編集された画像は最後に必ず「ダウンロード」してから保存。

写真掲載について
提供していただいた顔入りの写真は最終的にコラージュにして一枚の画像を作成し、全体で千羽鶴 に見えるように編集・加工します。作成されたコラージュは、主に広報及び周知活動の目的のた め、本学の公式サイト、大学管理下の SNS サイト(Facebook, Twitter 及び Instagram)、本学作成の追悼、復興支援、及び日本関係の動画等に一般公開されます。
