Order of Event

The Clinical Transition Ceremony is a milestone marking the end of the Foundations Phase before medical students embark on their Patient Care Phase of medical school. The Ceremony marks the transition from the classroom to clinical rotations. The new white coats are a gift from the UWSOM Alumni Association.

Award Descriptions

Arthur Schaible Award

The award is given to the student that best demonstrates excellence in Human Form and Function. Excellence in Human Form and Function is demonstrated not only by test scores, but also by the quality of dissections, participation in class activities, and interaction with other classmates. The recipient must exemplify excellence by showing leadership in the laboratory, and enthusiastically participating in all related anatomy and imaging class activities.

Jon B. Syren Award

This award recognizes a student in the UAA WWAMI School of Medical Education who has demonstrated personal qualities of character, integrity, and compassion, combined with a commitment to and promise of community service in medicine.

Xavier Engle Spirit Award 

This award recognizes an Alaska WWAMI student who, above intellectual competence, exhibits integrity, compassion and kindness toward the human condition. The recipient must have passion, courage, actions and aptitude to the best of their ability that include adventures within and beyond medicine. The recipient is an honorable person with a “joy of life” and with the qualities of a trusted friend and colleague.

Director’s Award

This merit award to a student who excels in many aspects of medical school and brings the richness of a diverse experience and perspective to the program.
