About the Center for Community Engagement & Learning

Since its founding in 2000, the Center for Community Engagement & Learning (CCEL) has supported community-engaged teaching, research, creative activities, and service. We cultivate partnerships, provide technical assistance, and create opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community partners to work together to build on our joint strengths to address Alaska’s most pressing challenges. Whether you are a community partner, student, faculty, or staff member, CCEL is here for you! Please connect with us.
Carnegie Statement on Community Engagement
Community engagement is at the center of everything we do. UAA is proud to be among a select group of institutions recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Community Engaged Institution, a distinction it has maintained since the classification first became available in 2006. Carnegie's definition of community engagement guides our work.
“Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.
The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.”

Advisory Council
CCEL is guided by an advisory council of faculty that help us make a meaningful campus impact. Members share their perspective, influence future programming, and help build a stronger bridge between UAA and the community.
Our council includes a wide range of perspectives, including junior and senior faculty, representation across programs, colleges, and campuses, and various strengths in CE teaching, research, and creative activities. If you have questions about the council, email uaa.ccel@alaska.edu.
