Michael Conti and Jonathan Green, two Anchorage based artists, are currently the Artists in Residence in Printmaking in the UAA Art Department. This recently established program allows local printmakers to work in the UAA studio on their current body of work while also assisting with the maintenance of the classroom and working with undergraduate art majors. Their presence sets a tone of a professional working press, which is essential in the development of young artists who will eventually be in the workforce.
Green, originally from Labrador City, Newfoundland, earned his MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta in 2016. His mixed media prints combine his documentation of the so-called ‘wilderness’, with appropriated images from historical exploration documents, survival books and online images of wild landscape. He recently canoed down the Yukon River as part of the Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency.
Michael Conti received his BFA from UAA and MFA from the Art Institute of Boston. Originally, Michael focused his creative energies in the area of photography which lead him to build a professional photography business, teach adjunct photography classes at UAA and develop a thriving studio practice. More recently, he has been combining both printmaking and photographic techniques to create photogravure portraits. In 2017, he applied for and received a Rasmuson Artist in Residence Grant which gave him the opportunity to work at the Zygote Press Printmaking Studio in Cleveland, Ohio.
