Working Conditions
Surgical Technologists work in clean, well-lit, cool environments. They must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. At times they may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. Surgical Technologists must understand that workers with impaired immune systems resulting from HIV infection or other causes are at an increased risk of acquiring or experiencing serious complications of infectious disease.
Essential Requirements
Students entering the Surgical Technology program must have the ability to perform a number of activities in the clinical portion of the program. At the minimum, students must:
- Be able to bend, walk, stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, and push equipment, supplies, and patients exceeding 25 pounds.
- Be able to work in environmental temperatures from 60 degrees to 95 degrees Fahrenheit range.
- Be aware that exposure to latex gloves may cause the development of allergic reactions.
- Be aware that their skin should be clear and free of conditions, which would impair the integrity of skin.
- Be able to go for long periods of time without going to the restroom or taking a break.
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to functionally perceive the nature of sounds and spoken words. Adaptive techniques or devices may be used.
- Be able to demonstrate the functional ability to obtain impressions of shape, size, and motion by passing routine vision screening and distinguishing red and green colors. Adaptive devices may be used.
- Surgical Technology students must not be infected with any infectious diseases that could be transmitted to patients. Surgical Technology students must also be aware that hospitals perform a pre-clinical drug screening test.
