BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship seeks intellectually outstanding postgraduate students with a capacity for leading and a commitment to improving the lives of others

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge

Full tuition coverage, airfare, family allowance, academic development, fieldwork and hardship funding, among others

CANDIDATE PROFILE

There is no one template for a Gates Cambridge Scholar; each Scholar is different and brings something unique

There are four (4) main criteria for the selection of a Scholar

  • Academic excellence: ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge
  • Leadership potential: must demonstrate a clear ability to lead
  • A commitment to improving the lives of others: must demonstrate a clear ability to work for the common good
  • A good fit with Cambridge: qualifications and aspirations accord with what Cambridge has to offer in its postgraduate programs

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Must be admitted to Cambridge University to be eligible to apply for the scholarship

Find a faculty member willing to serve as your mentor throughout the application process

Potential Scholars are interviewed and ranked by the department they are applying to at Cambridge University and their application forwarded to the Graduate School for further evaluation

Only the most outstanding candidates are considered further

SELECTION PROCESS

Approximately 4,500 in total (approximately 800 in the U.S. round and 3,700 in the international round)

Number of awards granted:

95 total (40 U.S.; 55 international)

National interview: Yes, if invited; costs are not paid
