Here are the events planned for February at the UAA Campus Bookstore. All events are free and open to the public, with free parking in the South Lot, the lot across from the bookstore.

Eowyn Ivey presents "Snow Child"
Monday, Feb. 4, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

At this event, Eowyn will discuss and read from her book, "Snow Child." Following the reading will be a Q-and-A led by David Stevenson, director of UAA's Department of Creative Writing and Literary Arts.

Tlingit master carver James Williams presents "Cracked Frog: Sharing Tradition and Art"
Wednesday, Feb. 6, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

James Williams is an Alaska Native born in Sitka. His clan is Raven/Frog, or Klks'adi from the Clay House. Besides being a renowned artist/carver, he is an accomplished blacksmith and knife maker. At this event, James will showcase examples of his work and discuss the art of carving. The Frog Feast Bowl Ceremony (unveiling Cracked Frog) was Nov. 29, 2012 at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

Chinese Spring Festival Celebration
Friday, Feb. 8, 2-5 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Chinese legends and traditional dumplings are themes at this event to welcome the Year of the Snake. Everyone is invited to attend. This special, free event is sponsored with the Confucius Institute. There is free parking at UAA on Fridays.

Vic Fischer discusses his memoir, "To Russia with Love"
Monday, Feb. 11, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Vic Fischer was born in 1924 Berlin. Come hear about Vic Fischer's life and the extraordinary global events that influenced his travels. Vic Fischer participated in the first Alaska State constitutional convention, co-authored the Alaska Constitution and has worked at UAA's Institute of Social and Economic Research. He is a living Alaska legend.


Chef Vern: Chocolates for Valentine's Day
Wednesday, Feb. 13, 1-2 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Chef Vern Wolfram, Department of Culinary Arts & Hospitality, demonstrates the special art of working with chocolate. Assisting him will be students from his culinary class. Special Valentine's Day treats are the theme for this tasty event.

Gem (Gordon) Thomas presents "The Journey of Writing the Strong Roads Series"
Wednesday, Feb. 13, 5:30-7 p.m.

Gem Thomas discusses his book "Strong Roads: A Spanish Shipwreck Survivor in Ancient Hawaii," his recent work and new EPUB 3.0 technology.

Victoria Kononova presents "The Snow-Maiden Fairytale in Russian Folklore, Literature, Music, and Arts"
Monday, Feb. 18, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Victoria Kononova is studying Slavic languages at the University of Wisconsin. Her dissertation is entitled "Nationalism, Ethnography, and the Appropriation of the Folk in Late Nineteenth Century Russian Literature and Culture." This event is cosponsored by the UAA Languages Department.

Searching for Booker Wright: A Conversation with Yvette Johnson
Wednesday, Feb. 20, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Yvette Johnson graduated from Northern Arizona University where she started The Booker Wright Project. In it, she researches the complicated life her grandfather lived in Greenwood, Miss., where he was a waiter in a "whites only" steakhouse as well as owner of a restaurant on the "black" side of town. Yvette Johnson is co-producer of "Booker's Place: A Mississippi Story" and the author of "Searching for Booker Wright." This event is sponsored with the UAA Sociology Department.

Author James Sweeney presents "Alaska Expedition: Marine Life Solidarity"
Monday, Feb. 25, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Climbing Mt. Johnson off Ruth Glacier with Dave Nyman is an Alaska story. Surviving eight days at death's door under an avalanche and writing an incredible, beautifully crafted book about the whole experience is another. These stories are all James Sweeney's. Everyone is invited to come celebrate the release of "Alaska Expedition: Marine Life Solidarity," an Alaska treasure, and hear James recount these stories and more.

Dr. Lyn Freeman presents "Evidence-Based Nutrition for Chronic Disease Prevention and Recovery, Part 2"
Tuesday, Feb. 26, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

This two-part event in the Research in Action: The Behavioral Medicine Lecture Series will focus on timesaving strategies for busy people. In this second half, Dr. Freeman will show you how to create a week's worth of cancer-fighting, chronic-disease-preventing, portable meals in one four-hour cooking block plus 10 minutes preparation each night. (Part 1 is Jan. 29, 2013.)
