Join us for a farewell reception Thursday, July 10, in honor of UAA Community and Technical College Dean Karen Schmitt. Karen will be leaving UAA in August to join the University of Alaska Southeast as dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and vice provost for Research and Sponsored Programs.

Under Karen's leadership, the Community and Technical College (CTC) achieved new levels of performance and strengthened its partnerships with industry, the community and K-12 school districts. Her contributions include:

  • Launching the Alaska Middle College School, leading to an expansion of dual enrollment in the College & Career Pathways initiative.
  • Increasing resources for CTC advising focused on student success outcomes.
  • Exploring the benefits of a university college strategy to enhance student academic support on the Anchorage campus.
  • Developing a new Continuing Education Department to provide noncredit training and instruction for the Anchorage community.
  • Securing more than $3.5 million in federal Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grants to expand workforce development training partnerships statewide via e-learning.
