COVID-19 Research Guidance

The following technology commercialization and venture fund structure was created to commercialize technology based on faculty and student research at UAA. The UA Board of Regents approved the fund structure in July 2012. 

UAA Technology Commercialization and Private Investment Structure

The purpose of Seawolf Holdings is to: 

  • Provide a corporate interface between UAA and its enterprise companies
  • To protect the university and limit its liabilities
  • Holding and commercializing Intellectual Property
  • Manage companies and enterprises

The functions of Seawolf Holdings include:

  • Overseeing the subsidiaries
  • Identify University Intellectual property that can be commercialized and advise the fund
  • License Intellectual Property to the IP/Sub LLC
  • Review and approve all investment and divestment decisions until a 3- to 5-person investment committee is formed

The purpose of the Seawolf Venture Fund is to:

  • Provide early-stage investment in select startup companies as a for-profit private equity fund
  • Enhance the reputation of Anchorage as a center for technology advancement and innovation

  • Led and successfully integrated acquisitions across the globe.

Mr. Stephen Socolof, Managing Partner, Tech Council Ventures.

  • Founder and Managing Partner of New Venture Partners - a global venture capital firm dedicated to corporate technology spin-outs with over $700 million under management.
  • NVP Launched 50 companies built upon innovations from (Lucent, British Telecom, Boeing, GE, IBM, Intel).

Dr. John Bischoff, Managing Partner of Half Moon Ventures LLC and Adjunct Professor, George Washington University

  • Former Vice President of Finance and Operations, America Online, Inc.
  • Held executive positions at IBM, including IBM Research at Watson Labs.
  • Serves on corporate and university boards.

Mr. John Wanamaker, Managing Member, Alaska Venture Partners

  • Active angel investment practice investing in companies both in and out of Alaska.
  • Founded/co-founded 7 companies.
  • Investor/Director of the Boardroom, and Vertical Harvest Hydroponics.
  • Serves on public and private Boards of Directors.

Dr. John Sibert, Founding Chairman, National Association of Seed & Venture Funds

  • Founding Executive Director, Alaska Science &Technology Foundation.
  • Former COO Tech Transfer & Industry Collaboration, California State University Institute.
  • Member of private and public Boards of Directors.
