Criteria for Acceptance of Transfer Credit

Student Transfer Credit Resource Site

The University of Alaska provides a transfer credit resource site called the Transfer Evaluation System (TES). This site is designed to provide you with the ability to view how courses have recently transferred to UAA from a variety of institutions, including UAF and UAS. This system is updated frequently and is by no means a comprehensive list of transferability. If a course doesn't transfer as you expected, contact your academic advisor about the petition process. 
 

Graduate Credits

Graduate level credits transferred for application to graduate certificates or degrees must be evaluated by faculty for approval.
 

Undergraduate Credits

Where possible, transfer credit is equated with UAA courses by matching the content, level of instruction, course activities and student outcomes. When this is not possible, evaluators may grant discipline-specific elective credit at the appropriate level.
    • Anatomy and Physiology courses generally transfer as Departmental Electives unless the full sequence is complete at the same university.
    • Military credits are only evaluated by request after meeting with an academic advisor. 
    • Credits from Charter Colleges are under a different accreditation system that do not transfer to UAA.
 

UAF & UAS Courses

Courses from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) or the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) are transferred to UAA based on applicability toward degree requirements. They are considered non-resident credits for purpose of graduation.

AAS and BS nursing students may take pre-major courses from any campus in the UA system. UAF and UAS courses may have different registration priority and course prerequisites. While courses frequently transfer automatically, occasionally students must contact their academic advisor to request a manual transfer. 
    • Classes transferred from outside the UA system into UAF or UAS do not always transfer to UAA as equivalent courses.
    • Nontraditional Credit Policies vary between campuses. Please check with a UAA advisor early about transferring AP Scores, CLEP or DSST exams, and Writing Credit by Placement.

Classes transferred from outside the UA system into UAF or UAS do not always transfer to UAA as equivalent courses. Prerequisites may vary across campuses; this list does not reflect those prerequisite courses.

Most classes will have the same subject and course number across campuses even if the title does not match exactly.

Academic Petitions

The School of Nursing (SON) attempts to make the most of student's transfer credits through the use of petitions. To start the petition process students need to meet with their academic advisors to see if a petition is possible. All students must still meet UAA's University Policies for graduation. Changes in course level, grading, or number of credits awarded cannot be petitioned. 

Steps to Start a the Process

  1. Meet with a SON Academic Advisor to see if a petition is appropriate and what type of documentation is needed. 
      • For courses taken outside of the UA system: a course syllabus from the institution of origin is usually needed. It is okay if the syllabus is not from the exact same semester you took the course as it is still the same course name and number. We cannot use a syllabus if the course name and number do not match your transcripts.
      • For UA courses: a course description(s) may be used if it provides sufficient information.
      • Petitions cannot be processed using textbooks, lab manuals, course notes, documentation in a foreign languages, etc.
  2. Your advisor will send you the petition through an email from DocuSign. This email does occasionally go to the spam folder.
  3. Some prerequisite courses may need to be approved by the Department Chairperson for the petitioned course (i.e. Anatomy & Physiology I or Survey of Chemistry).
  4. All nursing (NURS, NS, NSG, DNP) course petitions must include a syllabus and be individually evaluated by Nursing Faculty for approval
  5. Petitions are not guaranteed to be approved. Final authority to approve or deny petitions pertaining to program or college requirements rests with the Program Chair and Nursing Director.

Due to the volume of petitions processed, SON no longer accepts paper petitions initiated by students.

Courses that do not meet SON requirements

Courses listed under the following headings are the most frequently submitted courses that cannot be petitioned to meet our requirements. This is not an exhaustive list and each course must undergo individual review. Courses that transfer as direct equivalents to another UAA course rarely are able to go through the petition process. Please see your nursing advisor for details.

  • BIOL A111  & A112 Anatomy & Physiology

    Human Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) course(s) should cover human structure and function. Combined the courses must cover all of the following systems: circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal, and urinary systems. Courses must include a lab component.

    Courses that do not meet SON A&P with lab requirement
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology without labs
    • 1 semester of either Human Anatomy or Human Physiology
    • Mammalian Anatomy & Physiology
    • Comparative Anatomy & Physiology
    • Animal Anatomy & Physiology

  • BIOL A240 Microbiology for Health Sciences

    A Microbiology course should cover the medical aspects of microbial cell structure and function, including covering bacterial metabolism and genetics, virology, host parasite interactions, host defense mechanisms and epidemiology. Course must include a lab component.

  • CHEM A103/L Survey of Chemistry

    A Survey of Chemistry course should cover chemical reactions, stoichiometry, atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, equilibrium, and acid/bases.

    Note: CHEM A105/L is pre-approved to meet the CHEM A103/L requirement as long as the student is able to complete CHEM A104/L with a C or better.

    A Nutrition course studies nutrition in the life cycle including food sources and requirements of nutrients, and physiological and metabolic aspects of nutrient function. Reviews disease states, food selection, and cultural and contemporary issues of concern to health professionals.

    Courses named only Nutrition vary drastically between colleges and universities. These courses generally need a syllabus for processing

  • PSY A150 Life Span Development

    A Life Span Development course reviews physical, cognitive, and socioemotional aspects of human growth, maturation, and development across the lifespan. Must include all stages from birth to death and dying.

    Common courses that do not meet SON Life Span Development requirement

  • Reasoning Skills (PHIL A101, A201, or ENGL A120)

    A Reasoning Skills course should cover formal and informal reasoning skills, central problems of knowledge, reality, and good and evil. Emphasis on principles and techniques of critical thinking including a variety of methods for analyzing written and visual arguments in a variety of media.
