by Alaska WWAMI |
Congratulations to Dr. Holly Martinson, who has been selected for the Alaska Journal of Commerce and the Anchorage Daily News Top Forty Under 40. Dr. Martinson is a University of Alaska Anchorage graduate, an Associate Professor for Alaska WWAMI, and an Affiliate Assistant Professor with the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM). She teaches Alaska WWAMI students in the Foundations Phase blocks, and leads Research Methods, Independent Investigative Inquiry (III), and co-leads Blood and Cancer block.
As Dr. Martinson's nomination states, "Holly Martinson is the consummate Alaskan scientist and citizen. As she conducts cutting edge cancer research working toward treatments and cures for gastric and breast cancers, she brings prestige and generous grants to Alaska's academic and research community. Through her expertise and wisdom, opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate student medical research are numerous. Her research is focused on cancers of high incidence in the Alaska Native population, fulfilling an area of much desired treatment needs.
Beyond her research, she excels in teaching. Her students are huge fans of her intelligence and passion, and Holly is well known for her tireless dedication to her students. She is also a brilliant life-balance model for her students, leading by example as she engages in the myriad outdoor Alaskan activities. Holly has been critical to the success of Alaska's research grants funding, Alaskan Native cancer research, undergraduate and graduate research opportunities, and WWAMI medical education. Through her work with elementary and high school students, she inspires the next generation of Alaskan scientists and physicians to pursue and achieve their educational dreams."
This year, the selection committee considered 288 nominees, one of the largest number of submissions for the Top Forty Under 40 honors in years. Congratulations, Dr. Martinson, and thank you for all you do for our students and our communities!
