Guests

Commencement is a formal ceremony, where decorum and respect for the customs of the occasion enhances the experience for the graduates and their guests. Therefore, in accordance with hundreds of years of academic tradition, students, guests, and the platform party are asked to observe the following:

  • For the safety and security of our graduates and guests, mandatory security screening by walk-through metal detectors will be in place at UAA’s commencement ceremony. Screening stations will open outside all entrances beginning at 11 a.m., doors to the arena will open at 11:30 a.m. and general admission seating will begin at noon.*  For December's hybrid commencement, we anticipate using reserved seating so times may be adjusted. 

To help assure an efficient and positive experience for all, we ask that you:

Bring only essential items needed for the event.

Leave backpacks and bags larger than 4.5 x 6.5 inches at home.

Note that noisemakers and weapons will be refused at the screening stations.

  • A ticket is required for admittance into the Alaska Airlines Center. Copies of tickets WILL NOT be accepted. Once a ticket is scanned it cannot be reused. Guest tickets are distributed directly to graduates. *Seating is reserved for fall 2021 commencements and graduates must select seats for their two guests in advance of the ceremony.   

  • All attendees must remain seated throughout the ceremony.

  • Cell phones must be turned off or silenced.

  • All graduates and their guests are asked to remain for the entire ceremony out of respect for all graduates.

  • Outside food and beverages are prohibited.

  • Alcohol, noisemakers and balloons are prohibited in the Alaska Airlines Center and will be confiscated.

  • Guests are asked to exit the arena promptly following the ceremony to meet their graduates outdoors on the south (parking lot) side of the Alaska Airlines Center.
