Who is USUAA?

The Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage (USUAA) is recognized by the University of Alaska Board of Regents as the governing body for students enrolled at the University of Alaska Anchorage. As stated in the Constitution, the goals of USUAA are to:

  • Broaden the educational perspective of the students by instituting a structure of self‐governance.
  • Promote the educational needs, general welfare, and rights of the students.
  • Serve as a forum for students to express their ideas for enhancing the quality of their educational experience through expanded and improved communications among students, faculty, administration, and beyond.
  • Formulate policy and procedures concerning student life.
  • Serve all students equally, in accordance with Board of Regents Policy, federal and state law, prohibiting discrimination against individuals, including but not limited, on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, physical or mental disability, change in marital status, pregnancy, or parenthood.

Frequently Asked Questions 

  • What does USUAA do?

    USUAA serves students by:

    • Writing legislation to address campus issues and improve student life
    • Advocating on behalf of students at all levels of governance, including testimony at Board of Regents meetings and trips to the state legislature
    • Hosting student-requested events that build community and connection
  • Can I attend meetings?

    Yes! All USUAA meetings are open to the public. Students are welcome to attend, listen in, and share their voice.  Learn more on our Meetings and Minutes page.

  • What’s the difference between a Senator and a Delegate?
    • Delegates represent the student body within their specific college (based on their major) and typically commit around 3 hours per week
    • Senators represent the entire student body and commit around 5 hours per week, including meetings and additional responsibilities

  • Are the Boards and USUAA separate?

    USUAA Boards are branches of USUAA that operate independently to fulfill their specific missions. While they are not part of the USUAA Student Government Assembly and do not attend General Assembly meetings, they are still student-led and serve the campus community.

    Each board, such as the Green Fee Board, Concert Board, and Media Board, is funded through the Anchorage consolidated student fee and plays a vital role in enhancing student life through events, sustainability initiatives, and media programming.
