Categories and Criteria

The Chancellor's Awards for Excellence accepts nominations in nine categories. Awards are open to individuals and teams from the Anchorage campus or one of UAA's community campuses. Excellence in Teaching

Faculty | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

Demonstrates exceptional commitment to advancing a culture of institutional excellence that inspires and enables student achievement and success through excellence in teaching in two or more of the following aspects:

  • Instruction and learning experiences
  • Building and developing curriculum and learning resources
  • Mentoring students
  • Advancing student excellence
  • Advancing teaching excellence

Nominate a faculty member for the Excellence in Teaching award.


Excellence in Academic Research/Creative Activity

Faculty | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

Contributes outstanding and significant impact in a field of study and to advancing a culture of institutional excellence that inspires and enables student, faculty and staff success through research, engagement or creative activities that demonstrate the highest quality scholarship.

Nominate a faculty member for the Excellence in Academic Research/Creative Activity award.


Promoting Student Achievement

Faculty or staff | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

  • Outstanding contribution to student achievement that improves transition to higher education, performance and grades so that most students persist and complete their educational goals.
  • Demonstrated innovative and creative approaches in advising, programming, partnerships, outreach and support services that identify and remove barriers to success.

Nominate a faculty or staff member for the Promoting Student Achievement award.


Staff Excellence

Staff | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

Exercises leadership, initiative and outstanding teamwork capabilities that create a positive atmosphere, and consistently performs at a level above normal job requirements to advance culture of institutional excellence that inspires and enables student, faculty and staff success.

Nominate a staff member for the Staff Excellence award.


Excellence in Diversity

Faculty or staff | One award per year for all UAA campuses.

Outstanding contribution to the advancement of diversity of UAA students, staff and faculty through increasing the visibility and representation of diverse voices, creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness and community.

Nominate a faculty or staff member for the Diversity award.


Community Engagement and Service

Faculty or staff | One award per year for all UAA campuses.

  • Outstanding contribution to advancing partnerships between the university and Alaska's schools, public and private industries, and community organizations which advances a culture of institutional excellence that inspires and enables student, faculty and staff success and/or the university's role as a productive civic partner and an engaged university.
  • Demonstrated innovative and creative approaches to research and development partnerships which build and sustain Alaska's economic growth and promote reciprocity and shared decision making.

Nominate a faculty or staff member for the Community Engagement and Service award.


Climate Change Impact (formerly Sustainability)

Faculty, staff or students | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

Demonstrating outstanding commitment to reducing UAA's impact on the environment or increasing our understanding or the impacts of climate change through teaching, research or community service.

  • Impact level of action to further climate change awareness and participation in campus or in the community
  • Impact level or degree of action implementing new program and/or initiatives addressing climate change
  • Impact level demonstrating the fostering of community partnerships to support climate change efforts
  • Other noteworthy qualities considered

Nominate a faculty member, staff member or student for the Climate Change Impact award.


Transformation and Change Agent (new for 2020)

Faculty or staff | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

For making a significant and positive contribution toward support and implementation of a major organizational change.

Nominate a faculty or staff member for the Transformation and Change Agent award.


Friend and Advocate (new for 2020)

Individuals or organizations outside UAA | Up to two awards per year: One from the Anchorage campus; one from a community campus.

To individuals and organizations outside UAA for support of (other than financial) and advocacy for the university and its mission.

  • Examples of support and advocacy efforts
  • Relationship of efforts to university mission
  • Significance of direct impact of support efforts on university and its mission
  • Length of time of relationship of individual or organization with university
  • Other noteworthy qualities considered

Nominate an outside individual or organization for the Friend and Advocate award.


Operational Effectiveness (inactive)

The Operational Effectiveness award category was eliminated in 2020 due to insufficient nominations in prior years.


Safety (inactive)

The Safety award category was eliminated in 2020 due to insufficient nominations in prior years.
