What is medical laboratory science?
Using microscopes, chemical and cell analyzers, and other sophisticated biomedical instrumentation, medical laboratory scientists conduct lab testing on blood and other body fluids. As part of a healthcare team, medical laboratory scientists provide physicians with data to help diagnose, treat, monitor and prevent illness and disease.

Medical laboratory science scholarships and financial aid
Get help paying for college with university, department and program scholarships and awards. A variety of opportunities from private funders, such as the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and the Clinical Laboratory Scientists of Alaska, are also available to qualified undergraduate students.

Pre-major and full-major academic advising
Develop an academic plan to help you get and stay on track to earn your bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Academic advisors help you with admission requirements, program prerequisites, placement testing and more. After you’re admitted into the undergraduate program, faculty advisors can provide additional academic support to help you answer questions on everything from degree program requirements to practicum placements.

In the bachelor’s degree program, you can get certified as a phlebotomist in two years and medical laboratory technician in two years—all while earning course credits to earn your B.S. in medical laboratory science in four years.

Medical laboratory science bachelor’s degree program highlights

The medical laboratory science degree program at the University of Alaska Anchorage offers a variety of advanced resources and professional experiences that help undergraduate students develop the knowledge and skills they need to become successful medical laboratory scientists.

  • Gain valuable work experience in a clinical practicum placement. Over the course of two semesters, you’ll conduct clinical lab testing with a clinical affiliate under the supervision of certified, professional medical laboratory scientists. Clinical practicum placements provide unique opportunities outside the classroom and student lab to work with additional instrumentation, abnormal patient samples, advanced testing methods and other healthcare professionals.
  • Take advantage of additional opportunities offered by UAA’s clinical affiliates. As a medical laboratory science major, you’ll benefit from clinical practicum placements, coursework instruction and equipment donations from clinical labs such as Alaska State Public Health Laboratory, Blood Bank of Alaska, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic.
  • Learn from expert faculty who are certified medical laboratory scientists with advanced degrees. With extensive experience working in the field, program faculty leverage their connections with state and national professional organizations, as well as clinical facilities in Alaska, to create better academic and professional opportunities for undergraduate students.
  • Get additional hands-on training in the student lab. Well-equipped with high-tech instrumentation and equipment that medical laboratory scientists use, UAA’s undergraduate program also offers access to tutorials and simulations that provide additional opportunities to practice your skills.
