UAA’s Advanced Welding Occupational Endorsement Certificate program covers skills such as pipe fabrication, pipe welding and fitting processes. You’ll also get extensive hands-on practice, with one-on-one guidance from expert welding instructors. Courses in the advanced welding certificate program are based on standards established by the American Welding Society (AWS) and American Petroleum Institute (API). A total of 21 credits and two separate welding processes qualification tests are required for the occupational endorsement certificate.

Guided by industry experts, UAA’s advanced welding program offers extensive hands-on training and state-of-the-art facilities to prepare you for careers in pipe welding.
  • Learn from expert welding instructors. Our faculty are all Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) who specialize in different welding processes and inspection procedures.
  • Earn industry certifications. Our welding facility is an authorized Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) under the American Welding Society (AWS). We can conduct testing and issue certifications that are required for major infrastructure projects in the state. Our welding program can certify students from anywhere in the country on a variety of welding examinations.
  • Participate in professional clubs and events. These include the Alaska Chapter for the American Welding Society and the American Society for Nondestructive Testing.
  • Discover new career possibilities. 100% of the certificate program credits can be transferred toward an Associate Degree in Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Technology Leadership, giving you the opportunity to advance in industry or open your own business.

Thompson's TKY joint was constructed with three 8-inch diameter pipes. TKY joints are a type of pipe fabrication that is common in bridges, towers, offshore drilling platforms and other structural applications.

Advanced Welding Occupational Endorsement Certificate program curriculum

The advanced welding program curriculum covers on shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) on

  • Structural Plate: 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 3G/4G (AWS Qualification)
  • Pipe: 2G, 5G, and 6G open root (AWS Qualification)
  • High Strength Steels: 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 3G/4G (AWS Qualification)
Pipe Fabrication: 
  • Mathematical layouts
  • Branch Template Designs (based on APA 1104 branch connection weld tests)
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding:
  • Carbon steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminum 

You’ll also learn machine operation, trouble shooting basic field maintenance, base metal Preparation, oxyfuel cutting, and basic weld shop machinery operations.  Industry best practices for safety and hazard assessment, the application of mathematical formulas and computations in welding, and elevated communication skills.
