    • Click the blue 'register now' button

Please keep in mind that we offer two fairs in order to promote a greater variety of opportunities for students. We ask that you only register for both fairs if you have a strong interest in recruiting all majors.

Tips for Career Fair Success

Career Services is thrilled to support a variety of organizations in their recruitment endeavors. Please watch the following video for our top tips to engage students and alumni attending University of Alaska career fairs.

Open the boxes below for even more tips and guides to help you prepare for Spring Career Fair week!

  • Audience & engagement strategies

    Who to expect:

This event is open to all UAA students and alumni. Students are encouraged to attend the fair day that best aligns with their major, but are welcome to attend both days. The majority of attendees are undergraduate students from the Anchorage area.

The university encourages all students to come as they are regardless of dress or appearance. UAA Career Services does maintain a professional clothing closet that provides free attire to students as needed, but we do not prohibit students from attending based on dress. Students are encouraged to attend as they are rather than miss the opportunity to participate in this career development opportunity. We recognize that a number of students experience homelessness, may not be able to afford proper attire, and/or are balancing a busy schedule that does not allow time to change.

Students will vary in their level of preparedness. Career Services has many guides and resources, but students may choose not to utilize them especially if they are using the career fair as an exploratory tool.

    What they want:

All students regardless of academic year are invited and encouraged attend. Attendees may be looking to immediately apply for jobs and internships, seeking positions to apply for in the future, or exploring potential career pathways. Many students utilize recruitment events to learn more about career directions, industry trends, and company culture. They want to spend this time getting to know YOU and what you have to offer them now and/or in the future.

    How to engage:

    1. Understand that students are likely nervous and intimidated. Close your devices and welcome each student with a smile and a hello!
    2. Start the conversation with an easy question, such as "What brings you to the career fair?" or "What is your major?". Ask students if they have a particular career in mind or if they are still exploring their career interests.
    3. Be prepared to:
      • describe a typical day in the roles you are hiring for
      • understand and articulate the company culture
      • provide information on company pay and benefits
      • discuss opportunities for training, development, mentorship, and progression within the company
    4. Some students have physical copies of their resumes ready for you, while others may have them uploaded to Handshake. Be sure to ask students how to best follow up with them.
  • New digital student engagement feature!

    Handshake at the fair:

We are excited to implement employer booth check-ins! Upon arrival, you will notice your booth has a QR code on it. You will want to encourage students to scan this QR code as they visit your booth for easy follow-up after the fair. Handshake will send you a personalized digest the next day with contact information for all the students you spoke withReview this article for more information and please encourage students to scan the QR code at your booth!

  • Preparing your materials

With so many employers present at our fast-paced fair, it can be hard to catch and hold students' attention. Here are some tips for reaching our students at UAA:

    • Students are more likely to visit your table if they have an idea of what you can offer them and want to learn more. We request that you post your jobs in Handshake by February 20th so that students can view them before the fair.
    • We will provide you with a QR code to your Handshake profile. Please encourage students to scan this so that you can maintain a digital connection and direct students to your open job postings on Handshake.
    • Some students appreciate having something they can take with them after the conversation. In addition to providing a business card, we recommend offering a flyer with information about your open positions.
