Tips for Career Fair Success
Career Services is thrilled to support a variety of organizations in their recruitment endeavors. Please watch the following video for our top tips to engage students and alumni attending University of Alaska career fairs.
- Arrival & parking
Arrival and parking information will be sent to the registrant and any listed participants 1 week prior to the event.
Please email us at uaa_career@alaska.edu to request parking accommodations.
- Set-up
- We will provide a 3x5-foot table, 2 chairs, and free wifi
- Each booth is allocated approximately 5x8-feet
- As much as possible, organizations will be placed within the industry section (or sponsorship location) they have selected upon registration
- We cannot guarantee power access. While there is power in the building, we recommend planning accordingly and bringing equipment that does not require an outlet.
- The use of extension cords will not be permitted.
- Audience & engagement strategies
Review our student attendance analysis for a detailed look at previous career fair attendance.
Who to expect:
Our career fairs are open to all UAA students and alumni. While some events are major or industry specific we will not turn away any student regardless of major or class standing. Additionally, the university encourages all students to come as they are regardless of dress or appearance. UAA Career Services does maintain a professional clothing closet that provides free attire to students as needed, but we do not prohibit students from attending based on dress. Students are encouraged to attend as they are rather than miss the opportunity to participate in this career development opportunity. We recognize that a number of students experience homelessness, may not be able to afford proper attire, and/or are balancing a busy schedule that does not allow time to change.
Students will vary in their level of preparedness. Career Services has many guides and resources, but students may choose not to utilize them especially if they are using the career fair as an exploratory tool.
What they want:
All students regardless of academic year are invited and encouraged attend. Attendees may be looking to immediately apply for jobs and internships, seeking positions to apply for in the future, or exploring potential career pathways. Many students utilize recruitment events to learn more about career directions, industry trends, and company culture. They want to spend this time getting to know YOU and what you have to offer them now and/or in the future.
How to engage:
- Understand that students are likely nervous and intimidated. Close your devices and welcome each student with a smile and a hello!
- Start the conversation with an easy question, such as "What brings you to the career fair?" or "What is your major?". Ask students if they have a particular career in mind or if they are still exploring their career interests.
- Be prepared to:
- describe a typical day in the roles you are hiring for
- understand and articulate the company culture
- provide information on company pay and benefits
- discuss opportunities for training, development, mentorship, and progression within the company
- Some students have physical copies of their resumes ready for you, while others may have them uploaded to Handshake. Be sure to ask students how to best follow up with them.
- Utilizing Handshake
Before the fair:
- Post a job → Students want to see all positions in one place! Get their attention on Handshake, but know you can add a link to your website for the actual application.
- Update your employer profile → Most students will view your Handshake profile before applying. If your profile grabs their attention, they’re much more likely to dig deeper.
- Post to the feed → Students care about company culture and values. Use the feed to show who you are and what sets you apart
- Send personalized messages → 96% of Gen Z want to hear directly from employers with a clear call to action.
During the fair:
- Talk about your jobs on Handshake and invite students to apply!
- Invite students to follow you on Handshake so they can see when you post new jobs and updates.
After the fair:
- Send students a personalized message thanking them for meeting with you at the fair and inviting them to learn more.
- What to bring
- We encourage representatives to bring a tablecloth and/or signage with the company name and logo, flyers and/or informational materials.
- Some students appreciate having something they can take with them after the conversation. In addition to providing a business card, we recommend offering a flyer with information about your open positions.
- Representatives may choose to bring promotional items, swag, incentive prizes, food or non-alcoholic drink samples.
- Organizations may place a retractable floor banner behind their booth to promote their organization so long as it remains within the 5x8-foot space. Back-drops will only be permitted for gold sponsors at the general career fairs.
- Event policies
- Fair displays and promotional materials must be in compliance with campus policies. Career Services maintains the right to ask you to remove or modify any of your materials in compliance with these policies.
- Each organization may only have 2 representatives at their booth at any given time. If you wish to have more members in attendance they must rotate out, this is to comply with safety and accessibility standards.
- All materials must remain within your approximate 5x8-foot space. This includes floor banners, sandwich boards, props, etc. Items that are located outside of the 5x8-foot space will be asked to be taken down (i.e. electrical/extension cords, backdrops, putting greens). The use of extension cords will not be permitted.
