Reinaldo Robinson with Melba Núñez Isalbe April 11, 2008, Perico, Cuba.

Reinaldo: …comadre Dora Robledo, China.

Reinaldo Robinson: …friend Dora Robledo, China.  He saw the consecration of old Justo, and you already know about that.  When they consecrated old Justo, the old man didn't know how to swim, and he was thrown in that lagoon over there, and he came out holding the herb for his saint in his mouth. That's right, he didn't know how to swim.  They say when he was thrown in there; they knew that he couldn't get near water.  This story was told to me by Juan Francisco Angarica, Titi Chiquito.  They say he was there, under the water for half an hour or 45 minutes without knowing how to swim, and he got out.  He came out holding the herb in his mouth.  This story was told to me by him (Juan Francisco Angarica), and then the consecration continued from the sugar refinery, Central España, all the way to that lagoon, a street covered with white sheets.  He walked on those white sheets, without shoes.  When I look at the reality as I have described it to you, I have no interest in a person who strays from that path.  I say hello, and I respect the path he must walk, I don't create problems with anyone.  I look forward to the day when they are sent to get me and I meet my end, because I always tell people that I am taking care of and watching over life itself.

Melba: Robinson, they say there is a story that at one time Oddu Aremu wanted to go back to Africa.

Robinson: Yes, and Malé was the one who brought him back.  Who told you that story?

Melba: Hilda.

Robinson: That's how it was, and Malé was the one who brought him back, Fidela Zulueta brought him back. She came here, I don't know if it was true she came here on foot from España (the refinery) and it was difficult to walk for Maria Fidela, with all her calluses.  Perico Zulueta went after her and asked her, "Where are you going?" She was in a trance and sat right there. Fidela Zulueta was in a trance and said to him, "my friend you cannot leave me here alone".  The old man was sitting on the rocking chair and said, "Well I'll be here and you cannot leave. When you leave I have to go with you to Africa.  I'll see how long this whole thing takes". That's how they started, until Oddu came down and said he wanted to go back to Africa.  I'm not sure if it happened exactly like this, but it seems like they argued that way from time to time. That was the only time I saw Oddu like that, and Malé, Fidela's deity brought him back. Those people danced here every once in a while…
