The University of Alaska Anchorage's Business Enterprise Institute is pleased to announce the inauguration of its new division, Corporate and Professional Development. Through this entity, organizations and individuals throughout Alaska will have the opportunity to learn from some of the most knowledgeable, effective and well-respected faculty and staff of the university.

To inaugurate this entity, we are launching two exceptional classes: "Negotiations" and "Managing for Effectiveness," both of which will be offered by Frank Jeffries, Ph.D., of the university's College of Business and Public Policy. See below for class descriptions and schedules.

Negotiations: A Three-Day Class July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 28 in Anchorage

Every day in Alaska, companies are involved in serious negotiations affecting every facet of their businesses, including interactions with customers, collaborating with suppliers, problem-solving with subsidiaries and reaching successful agreements within their own organizations. The quality of the agreements reached depends on the negotiating ability of your employees. Companies are literally walking away from millions of dollars annually as a result of poorly conducted negotiations. In this three-day class, you will:

  • Experience a hands-on approach to developing and improving your negotiation skill set;
  • Discover how to create value for both parties through collaboration;
  • Learn how to effectively plan for negotiation and improve your individual outcomes; and
  • Develop effective tools for handling difficult negotiations.

Managing for Effectiveness: A Three-Day Class July 25, Aug. 8, and Aug. 29 in Anchorage

Your effectiveness as a manager depends on the strengths and weaknesses of your approach to managing employees. Insights gained through continued education and experience will result in significant improvements in your managerial capability-which will be noticeable to you as well as those around you. In this three-day class, you will gain a practical understanding of the most effective skills in directing the work of others. You will:

  • Learn what causes employees to want to achieve excellent results;
  • Discover how your actions affect others and learn how to be a positive;
  • Increase your influence in your organization;
  • Develop skills to be an effective team player;
  • Learn what management by inspiration can achieve and learn tools to achieve it; and
  • Make a difference in the lives of your employees and your organization.
