Wednesday, Nov. 19, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore, Second Floor

Join us for an introduction to renowned Chinese authors Mo Yan and Qian Zhongshu, and enjoy a preview of the television show "Empresses in the Palace."

After, plan to join the Confucius Institute reading group for exciting book discussions and free seminars with UAA professors in January and February. The group will begin by reading Fortress Besieged by Qian Zhongshu and Red Sorghum by Mo Yan. Both books will be available for purchase at the UAA Campus Bookstore.

Fortress Besieged by Qian Zhongshu is considered one of the great masterpieces of 20th century Chinese literature. The novel offers a humorous look at middle-class Chinese society in the late 1930s.

Red Sorghum by Mo Yan, winner of a Noble Prize in literature, is considered one of the author's best works. The novel is about a young woman's life working on a distillery for sorghum liquor.

"Empresses in the Palace," based off an Internet novel, is available to view for free online at YouTube. An American TV adaptation is currently in the works.
