Celebrate 2015 Alaska Civil Rights Month at UAA

2015 Alaska Civil Rights Month Kick-Off, Jan. 20 Tuesday, Jan. 20, 12-2 p.m. Lucy Cuddy Hall

UAA invites you to celebrate with us as we recognize the 2015 Alaska Civil Rights Month. In celebration of the month, UAA will hold an Alaska Civil Rights Month Kick-Off and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. The celebration will feature spoken performance by the Clark Middle School Informers and a keynote address by the Honorable George Martinez.

We will be serving birthday cake following the program in celebration and recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.

We would like to send a special thanks to Clark Middle School and the Clark Middle School Informers for their participation in our Civil Rights Month celebration. Clark Middle School Informers include: Nuulau Alaelua, Kelsey Del Rosario, Lafililo Faafiti, Jaycee Fisher, Analise Franklin-Santacrose, Sarah Jackson, Kristian Lauofo, Tiawna Lecato, Kingie Lor, De-Vine Maga-Silva, Monai Meas, Julian Rivera-Brown, Nakayla Ross, Malachi Sparks and Ashley Young.

Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr., original Freedom Rider - Lecture and book signing Thursday, Jan. 22, 7:30 p.m. Wendy Williamson Auditorium

Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr., one of the original Freedom Riders, is a longtime civil rights activist, organizer and an authority on nonviolent social change. Join him for a special lecture and book signing at UAA. Read more about Dr. Lafayette in this special Seawolf Weekly story.

Women's Studies Department presents Reel Women Film Series - "Standing on My Sisters' Shoulders" Friday, Jan. 23, 7-9 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

The award-winning documentary "Standing On My Sisters' Shoulders" is the compelling story of the Mississippi Civil Rights movement from the point of view of its remarkable and courageous women who changed the course of history. For more information, visit sisters-shoulders.org.

Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration Thursday, Jan. 29, 12-2 p.m. Student Union, Cafeteria

Featuring speaker Dr. E. Louis Overstreet, author of "Black on a Background of White: A Chronicle of Afro-American's Involvement in America's Last Frontier."
