UAA selected for 2015 Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation

The UAA Center for Community Engagement and Learning announces that UAA is one of a select group of colleges and universities to receive the 2015 Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. UAA was one of only 74 institutions to receive the initial designation in 2006; 361 campuses now have this important designation in total across the United States.

UAA provided many examples of our work with communities in an extensive application. A sample of stories about community-engaged projects, including collaborations with Anchorage-based initiatives as well as rural Alaska communities, can be found in two publications available on the CCEL website.

Formally approved by the University of Alaska Board of Regents and now 14 years old, CCEL continues to be an important source of support and expertise for our commitment to collaborate and partner with our communities. CCEL connects faculty and students with community initiatives and provides resources, technical assistance and avenues for student leadership in community engagement.

"We are gratified to have been selected for this honor and to be one of an elite group of institutions recognized for our community engagement and community outreach," said CCEL Director Judith Owens-Manley. "We at UAA are committed to working with communities on addressing social issues together and combining our different resources and sorts of knowledge and expertise to make a bigger difference than we can make alone."
