by Tracy Kalytiak  |

UAA students will have the opportunity to address a group of Alaska legislators about the impacts of budget cuts on their higher education degree programs during Cutting SMART, a student-led forum organized through a partnership with the Union of Students at UAA, UAA National Society for Student Leadership and Success and UAA College of Business and Public Policy's Master of Public Administration graduate students.

The event will take place Thursday, Dec. 1, at the UAA/APU Consortium Library, room 307, from 4-6 p.m.

Student ombudsman Demry Mebane will host the event, and two students from each college will speak about the impact of budget cuts on their UAA college degree program and tuition. Also, MPA students will present student papers on the impacts of Alaska fiscal imbalance on other public programs, followed by an open-mic session for more student testimony about UAA budget cuts.

Legislators attending include: Alaska Sen. Berta Gardner and Reps. Geran Tarr, Chris Tuck, Ivy Spohnholz and Les Gara, along with Lizzie Kubitz, legislative aide for Rep. Matt Claman, and Celeste Novak, legislative aide for Rep. Andy Josephson. For more information, contact Carla Burkhead, caburkhead@alaska.edu, or Dr. Sheila Selkregg, saselkregg@alaska.edu.
