March 2018: UAA painting and sculpture students' work focus of downtown art exhibit

The painting and sculpture concentration areas at UAA worked together to create an exhibition of works titled, UAA painting and sculpture student showcase: Technology and Nature.

UAA painting students were given the article "I Used to be a Human Being" by Andrew Sullivan published in New York Magazine. The article goes through the myriad of ways in which technology and our current relationship with it might have unforeseen dangers and consequences. The students were asked to respond to the article with a painting.

UAA sculpture students created work inspired by the theme of technology and nature. This was approached in a number of different ways considering material, concept and aesthetics. The work included in the gallery utilizes a variety of mixed media and approaches, including but not limited to carved and fabricated wood, cast aluminum, fabricated steel, cast concrete, resin, clay and found objects.

These artworks appear on display for First Friday, March 2, 5-9 p.m. in the North and South Gallery at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art (427 D Street). The exhibit, which will be on display throughout March, represents a range of work being created within the Department of Art at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
