Economics alum Kelcie Ralph to deliver 2018 Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium keynote address Apriil 19

Dr. Kelcie Ralph will present the keynote address for the 2018 UAA Undergraduate Research Discovery Symposium on April 19.

UAA alumna Dr. Kelcie Ralph (B.A. Economics '09) will deliver the keynote address for the 2018 Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium on Thursday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the UAA Student Union. Ralph, assistant professor of transportation planning at Rutgers University, will present:

"What do transportation planners do?" When transportation planners introduce themselves to someone new, they inevitably face the same question: "When are you going to fix the congestion?" In this talk, Dr. Kelcie Ralph explains that transportation planners do not only fix congestion, they also tackle climate change, promote equity and improve safety. In this wide-ranging talk, Ralph draws on practice and scholarship to introduce practices and worldviews of transportation planners. The talk provides a toolkit to help the audience understand 21st century transportation challenges like shared mobility and autonomous vehicles.

This talk is free and open to the public.

About the speaker, Kelcie Ralph Dr. Kelcie Ralph is an assistant professor of transportation planning at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Dr. Ralph's research centers on three themes: equitable access to opportunities, understanding urban planners and encouraging a shift away from automobiles.

Dr. Ralph earned her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her doctoral thesis, awarded the Barclay Gibbs Jones Award for Best Dissertation in Planning, examined the causes and the consequences of the decline in driving among young people. As a Marshall Scholar, she earned two master's degrees, one at Cambridge University in environmental policy and one at the London School of Economics in city design and social science. Dr. Ralph earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the College of Business and Public Policy at the University of Alaska Anchorage where she was also a University Honors Scholar. In her free time, Dr. Ralph enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee, hiking and camping.
