UAA Staff Council Update: March 7, 2019 Meeting

UAA Staff Council members

Guest Speakers: Chancellor Cathy Sandeen and Dr. Susan Kalina

Chancellor Sandeen discussed UA's current budget situation. She is waiting for additional information before proceeding with any specific plans for UAA. Some possibilities being considered: the Chugiak-Eagle River Campus lease; moving employees from the University Center to the main campus; and not filling currently vacant positions. She encouraged personal advocacy regarding the general budget and proportional budgeting.

Dr. Kalina spoke about Institutional Accreditation. The NWCCU reaffirmed UAA's regional accreditation. The NWCCU is also changing their standards in regards to accreditation and will be focusing on institutional effectiveness and student learning. Other items discussed

  • Staff Council Mentorship Program: The Staff Council voted to move forward with this program.
  • Budget: The council engaged in a roundtable discussion about the budget and personal advocacy.
  • Professional Development: The council's Human Resources Committee held the first in a series of leadership classes. The next training is "Managing the Appraisal Process" on April 5, 2019.
  • Staff Emeritus: The council reviewed the nomination packages and voted on the applicants.
  • Staff Morale Survey: Results will be issued this month.
