Chancellor Update: BOR declares financial exigency

Cathy Sandeen, UAA Chancellor

Dear UAA Community,

Today has been a difficult day for all of us. Many of you tuned in this morning to listen to the Board of Regents' meeting. Although we expected the board to vote to approve the declaration of financial exigency, it was still difficult to hear.

At this time, the board is carefully considering the direction of the university, but it did not make any final decisions today regarding the university's structure. You can find President Johnsen's presentation on the board's website, and his systemwide email communication provides additional information about what financial exigency means.

In the meantime, I want to encourage you to support one another. Please reach out to your department and college leadership if you have questions.

I also want to remind you of the resources available to you. Students can find support through the Dean of Students Office and the Student Health and Counseling Center. Deer Oaks, our Employee Assistance Program, is available to faculty and staff.

Please know, as information becomes available, I will share it with you. For now, we will continue preparations for the fall semester in support of our students, and we look forward to the Board of Regents' meeting on Tuesday, July 30, when they will continue their discussion of cost reduction and university structure.

With deep appreciation,

Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor
