How does HWW do good?
Volunteering with the Food Bank of Alaska, we have helped with their Box Builds and
with their Mobile Food Pantries. The Box Builds are assembly lines for making boxes
of food. The boxes get sent out to seniors in Alaska that are food insecure. The Mobile
Food Pantries are set up in parking lots where people in need can come and fill bags
or boxes of food to take home with them. Before nursing and assisted living homes
went on lockdown, a few of our members also visited seniors in the community a few
times a week — running errands for them, cleaning their homes, etc.
Why does this work matter — both to the students and to the community?
As students, we are a part of this community. We should consider it our responsibility
to help take care of it. There are many people in need, but without helping hands
it can be hard to get the job done. Helping, and spending time with the seniors in
our community is important — and we enjoy it because we get to learn from them!
What brings members of HWW together?
Ultimately, our faith in God, and our love for others. We are a faith-based, service-oriented
group that strives to emulate our beliefs through action. We believe that others come
first, especially those in need. Our best memories and experiences come from the times
we've helped others. And we do so while having FUN!
Tell us about the highlights of your experience.
Making connections around our community — befriending the people we serve, and staff
and volunteers from other organizations. Also, we were part of a KTVA segment spreading awareness about the Food Bank of Alaska and food insecurity.
Thanks, HOPE Worldwide, for doing good!
