Important update on spring 2022 course delivery

Dear UAA Students,

Happy New Year and welcome to spring semester 2022. With the new year comes new challenges. Extreme travel delays and widespread weather-related damage combined with the fast-spreading COVID-19 variant, omicron, means the beginning of the semester may look a little different.

For the first two weeks of classes, your instructor will decide whether to hold class in-person or online. Your instructor will let you know about their decision in an email and on Blackboard. If you have questions or specific accommodations about remote delivery, please contact your instructor. Your faculty are here to help you be successful.

If your instructor chooses to hold class in-person, our mask policy from last fall still applies and where sufficient space is available, students and faculty are required to maintain physical distance. Vaccines are also available at the UAA Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC), which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information and resources, visit the UA Vaccine Information page. Read more about our mitigation strategies on our COVID-19 FAQ page.

If your instructor chooses to shift to remote learning, the change is temporary. At this time, our plan is to return to face-to-face instruction Jan. 24, 2022 unless the COVID-19 situation continues to pose challenges or worsens.

These temporary changes will not negatively impact international students, nor those who receive VA or other benefits. This change applies unconditionally to classes originally scheduled to meet in-person on the Anchorage campus, but does not impact courses scheduled to meet fully online or via synchronous technologies such as Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate.

During this time, it’s important that flexibility is exercised by both faculty and students. The past several years have taught all of us how adaptable and flexible we can be. We are excited to welcome you to spring semester for a full slate of classes and learning!

Sincerely,
Denise Runge,
UAA Provost
