March 28: Moving Forward, Thinking Ahead

The UAA community is also invited to Chung’s public lecture on Thursday, March 28: 'Moving Forward, Thinking Ahead: The Value and Ideals of a Good Education'. What constitutes a good education? How do we measure a good education? In this session, we will discuss ways in which higher education can prepare and support students with the skills and experiences needed for success in the community and in the workforce.

March 29: Let's Get Critical

Chung will lead the workshop 'Let’s Get Critical! Workshop' on connecting creative and critical thinking competencies with student engagement. As students continue to feel uncertain and overwhelmed thinking about life after college, this discussion is a practical session on how to specifically connect two (often) diametrically opposed ways of pedagogical learning: creative expression and critical understanding in course development, design and evaluation, with special attention to the skillsets established in core competencies.

Guest Speaker Biography

Leeva C. Chung, Ph.D., is a professor of communication studies, director of the individualized major, and an affiliate faculty member in ethnic studies at the University of San Diego. Leeva enthusiastically developed a unique and innovative style of teaching which some describe as “organized chaos,” but refers to methods of engagement such as project-based learning and integrating theory into practice within the context of the classroom. Her advocacy for student driven pedagogy has been recognized with numerous awards on campus, such as the Davies Award for Teaching Excellence, Faculty Changemaker Champion, Outstanding Preceptor Award and the Innovation in Community Engagement Award.
