Engineering Student Collaborates with Biological Science Major to Win Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award

May 10, 2018

Congratulations to UAA Civil Engineering major, Canyon Lewis, on receiving the 2018 Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award.  Canyon, together with Biological Sciences major Claire Lubke, will use the Award to design an autonomous aeroponic garden system. Their research will potentially benefit Alaskan communities by promoting locally grown food to reduce dependence on food being shipped into Alaska.

Mechanical Engineering Professor and his Student Assistant Study Pipeline Longevity

April 26, 2018

Professor Matt Cullin and his undergraduate assistant, Keir Johnson, have used a  ConocoPhillips Arctic Science and Engineering Endowment Award to create a tool to study the effects of corrosion on pipelines. By replicating the conditions that can lead to a catastrophic oil spill, they hope to prevent such future disasters.

Robert DeVassie

Building a safer, healthier Alaska through engineering (and bikes)

April 24, 2018

For anyone who knew Robert DeVassie '02 in college, his current level of involvement shouldn't be a surprise. At UAA, he led the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter, served as UAA homecoming king (which is maybe how he met his wife, who also graduated from UAA) and did a semester exchange to Anchorage's sister city Magadan, Russia.

Lending a hand: How mechanical engineering alumnus Victor Samoei paid it forward

January 12, 2018

On Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, Victor Samoei walked across the stage in the Alaska Airlines Center during UAA's fall commencement ceremony. The new mechanical engineering graduate looked out into the audience waving to his mother and father who had traveled halfway around the world from Kenya, Africa, to experience this moment.

Jordan Cooper

Girl Scouts, STEM and Jordan Cooper

December 19, 2017

University of Alaska Anchorage civil engineering student Jordan Cooper never imagined that signing up as a Brownie with her local Juneau Girl Scouts chapter in first grade would end up being such a transformative experience-but it was.

Taylor Noga

Scholar-athlete digs engineering

December 18, 2017

A civil engineering major, Taylor holds a 3.55 GPA over three years on the team. That's no easy task, considering her demanding student-athlete schedule, but it's fitting for someone who loves engineering and volleyball in equal measure.

Virginia Groeschel
