2013 National Suicide Prevention Week
by Michelle Saport |
Each year in the U.S., 1,100 college students die by suicide. But suicide can be prevented.
Get involved at the prevention activities happening on campus this week:
- The UAA Integrated Suicide Prevention Initiative and Student Health and Counseling Center invite you to visit a display of 1,100 flags, located in the Cuddy Quad, symbolizing the loss of college students by suicide each year and reminding everyone the importance of suicide prevention awareness and actions. A booth with resources and information on campus prevention activities will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 10in the Cuddy Quad and Sept. 12 in Social Sciences Building.
- The Psychological Services Center (Social Sciences Building, Room 255) and Student Health and Counseling Center (Rasmuson Hall, Rooms 116 and 120) will hold open houses Sept. 11, from 5-7 p.m. Come meet the staff and receive information about the mental health services offered at each location.
- Sign up for gatekeeper suicide prevention training, offered by the UAA Integrated Suicide Prevention Initiative (UAA-ISPI). The training helps campus community members recognize suicide risk and feel confident intervening with someone who may be suicidal. A student gatekeeper training will be held Sept. 12, 1:30-3 p.m., in Allied Health Sciences Building, Room 207. Visit the UAA-ISPI training page to register.
