Three UAA students named 2013 Alaska Ethics Bowl champions

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Seawolf Debate program, in conjunction with The Alaska Ethics Center and UAA Philosophy Department. hosted the 4th Annual Alaska Ethics Bowl. Over the course of four rounds, more than 35 students from both UAA and Alaska Pacific University met to debate questions of morality concerning controversial cases ranging from prayer in schools and surrogacy rights to the personal boundaries of social workers and foster children.

At the end of a heated final round between the top two preliminary-ranked teams, the team "Freedom Thunder" consisting of Nate Graham (freshmen, environment & society), Corey Hester (senior, journalism ) and Sarah Elton (sophomore, anthropology) from UAA were named the 2013 champions. The team "Knights of Standards & Practices" consisting of Chris Caswell, Stacey Lucason, Caitlin Alonzo and Kay Church received finalist honors. Team Freedom Thunder will travel to represent Alaska at the Northwest Regional Ethics Bowl in late November hosted in Seattle in the hopes of advancing to the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in February 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Ethics Bowl was inaugurated four years ago by the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Socratic Society. We are very excited to see the program grow and bring Alaska to the national competitive circuit. We'd also like to thank the faculty, alumni and community volunteers who came out to judge the event.
