Last day to recommend a student for 20th Annual MLK Student Appreciation Luncheon

by Michelle Saport  |

Shine a light on a deserving student while helping build a tradition. Staff and faculty have the opportunity to recommend students for recognition at the 20th Annual MLK Student Appreciation Luncheon in January. Sponsored by the Chancellor's Office and Student Activities, the annual luncheon honors students making a difference in their communities.

What is it? The Martin Luther King Jr. Student Appreciation Luncheon is an annual event celebrating the many contributions of our students who make a difference in the UAA community. One of Dr. King's important messages was that we as individuals can make a difference in the lives of others and in society. Staff and faculty members may recommend students making a difference in the university, the community, their department and/or their class through their efforts.

All recommended students, as well as the staff and faculty members who submit recommendations, are invited to the luncheon on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at 11:45 a.m., in the Student Union. Our keynote speaker is Peabody and Emmy Award-winning radio journalist Michele Norris. The first African-American female NPR host, Norris is also the author of The Grace of Silence: A Memoir and founder of race relations initiative "The Race Card Project."

Which students may be recommended? Any UAA student who makes a difference at UAA, in the community, their department and/or their class through outstanding efforts may be recommended.

Who may recommend students? Any UAA staff or faculty member may recommend students. We request you limit recommendations to no more than three students.

How do you recommend students? You can recommend up to three students who make a difference on the MLK website. The deadline for recommendations is Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m.

We look forward to celebrating our amazing students and Dr. King's legacy with you on Jan. 24, 2014. If you have any questions about this event, please call (907) 786-1219 or email mlk@uaa.alaska.edu.
