Fall 2013: 50th anniversary commemorative coins on sale now

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Reservations and prepayments are now being accepted from members of the public for the Kenai Peninsula College, Kenai Peninsula Borough and Kenai Peninsula Borough School District commemorative coin sets.

The collectable coins are being minted in both silver and copper with unique serial numbers. Clayton Brockel (1926-2013), KPC's founding director, Harold Pomeroy (1902-1983), the first borough chairman (now mayor) and Sterling Sears (1903-1992), the initial superintendent of the school district, will have their likenesses, along with the organizations' logos, on the coins. Each coin will have a certificate of authenticity that reflects their historical significance.

The six coin sets, three silver and three copper (with matching serial numbers) are packaged together. The first production run is 155 sets and a second run of coins may be considered, depending on demand, but no more than 215 sets will be produced. Cost of the coin sets is $380 and any sales profits will fund a KPC art student scholarship.

The purchase of the coins will be through the Kenai River Campus Bookstore (cash, check or credit card). Payment by credit card is available by calling 907-262-0312 (toll free 1-877-262-0330 and ask for the bookstore). Shipping and handling, including insurance, is available via priority, registered mail for $25.

All serial number reservations will be taken on a first come, first serve basis and must be made directly via e-mail to: wskendrick@kpc.alaska.edu. Once the reservation has been requested, purchase can be made. Everyone who has reserved a set will be contacted when the shipment arrives and reservations will be held until 5 p.m. on Feb. 28 at which time sets not yet purchased will be returned to the general pool. A delivery date for the coin sets has not been determined but they are expected before the holiday break.

The Kenai River Campus Bookstore hours are: Dec. 20 & 23: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Dec. 24: 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Jan. 7-10: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Jan. 13-17: 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. The remainder of January and February, the bookstore will be open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
