20140609-acsm-student-bowlThanks to financial support from the local American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)  chapter and generous donations to the "Excellence in HPER" foundation account, three UAA students were able to travel to the annual ACSM conference in Orlando, Fla. last week. The purpose of their travel was two-fold-professional development and participation in the Student Bowl competition.

The annual ACSM Student Bowl is a national academic competition where undergraduate students in kinesiology-related majors showcase their knowledge of exercise science. The competition operates in Jeopardy-style format with single-, double- and final-round questions of escalating difficulty. Teams of three students are quizzed on topics such as anatomy, physiology, EKG, biomechanics and exercise prescription.

This was not only UAA's first time to have a team in the competition, this was the first-ever team from Alaska in the competition. We're so proud of our students for taking on this challenge and for representing us so well. The UAA team-comprised of Michael Holmes, Ashley Schroeder and Dudley Babb (see photo)-placed fifth in this national competition.

Congratulations, Michael, Ashley and Dudley!
