Thursday, July 31, 10-11:30 a.m. Lyla Richards Conference Room (Student Union, Room 103)

USUAA referendum 14.03 for a smoke-free UAA passed with 51.5 percent voting in favor. The vote is advisory to the UAA administration. Should UAA choose to adopt a smoke-free campus policy, the Dean of Students Office, Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management Support (EHS/RMS) and the Office of Student Affairs are sponsoring the webinar "Tobacco Free Campus Update: Policy, Strategies and Outcomes" to help prepare the campus community for implementation.

Join in a conversation about a variety of policies on diverse campuses from small and private to large and public, effective strategies to promote tobacco-free campuses and policy outcomes. The webinar will also explore implications of the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration's proposed regulations over new tobacco products including e-cigarettes and nicotine gels.

Panelists:

  • Ellen J. Hahn is an alumni professor in the Colleges of Nursing and Public Health at the University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington, and holds the Marcia A. Dake Endowed Professorship in Nursing.
  • Tiffany Bowman is the health promotion coordinator for the Campus and Community Alliances for Smoke-Free Environments (CASE) at the University of Missouri.

Participation outcomes:

  • Develop effective advocacy strategies to promote tobacco-free campuses and understand the implications for their particular institution.
  • Review the campus policy movement to date.
  • Discuss comprehensive, evidence-based approaches guided by a model of campus tobacco-free policy change.
  • Learn specific ways of systematically implementing and evaluating a tobacco-free campus in order to promote compliance with the policy.
  • Analyze and identify policy outcomes from campuses that have implemented change.
  • Explore new tobacco products-including e-cigarettes-and how they might impact your campus policy.
