UAA Professor Bruno Kappes recently presented at the ePIC 2014 conference in London.

UAA Professor Bruno Kappes, Ph.D., recently presented a research paper, "Enhancing Evidence-Based eLearning Performance by Teaching eFolio Thinking Competencies," at ePIC 2014. His presentation was based on years of research conducted with his graduate teaching assistant Mia Cao on incorporating eFolio Thinking into all his psychology online classes over four semesters. This annual international conference invited select business and academic professionals from more than 20 different countries to participate in ePIC 2014, the 12th International ePortfolio and Identity Conference, in London, England, July 9-11, 2014.

Kappes has used variations of eFolio Thinking protocols testing reflection, critical thinking and other eFolio Thinking strategies contrasted against objective multiple-choice exams and final grades. Kappes and Cao evaluated students (N=671) in several upper- and lower-division eLearning psychology classes across four semesters. Data showed eFolio Thinking protocol assignments were superior to and better final grade predictors than midterm and or final exams in both upper- and lower-division eLearning psychology courses.

Over the past 35 years, Kappes has pioneered distance delivery psychology course instruction via teleconferencing and live televised courses statewide in Alaska and Hawaii, as well as through the use of video, DVDs and eLearning. He currently provides eLearning psychology courses to 750 students per year (250 per semester) in subjects that include general, abnormal, stress, forensic and trauma.

Professor Kappes has presented numerous presentations on eLearning strategies at national and international conferences, including the 2008 iLearning Forum in Paris, France, EDULEARN10 in Barcelona, Spain, INTED 2013, Valencia, Spain, ePIC 2011, 2012 and 2014 in London, England, Sloan-C 2013 in Las Vegas and AABBEL 2013 in Boston. Kappes is also an associate editor of psychology for MERLOT. He has been an active UAA faculty promoter and passionate leader/facilitator of several university-wide ePortfolio initiatives and currently serves on the UAA ePortfolio Advisory Council.
