UAA Professor Emeritus Les Heasley passes away

by Michelle Saport  |

Dr. Les Heasley died Aug. 21, 2014, in Portland, Ore. He was a UAA Professor Emeritus who started teaching chemistry in August 1970, first for Anchorage Community College and then for University of Alaska Anchorage. After suffering a cardiac arrest on campus in June 2007 and being brought back to life by a quick-thinking colleague who knew CPR, he retired in May 2008. He and his wife moved to Hillsboro, Ore., where he could be near a well-known heart hospital. In 2012, he had a specialized surgery to install an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) to combat congestive heart failure and extend his life. Two years later, after a follow-up surgery, he was unable to recover. His family is hosting a Celebration of Life on Friday, Sept. 12, 6 p.m., at ChangePoint Church in Anchorage.

Les' family would like to make a book of written memories to keep. If you have a memory or something you'd like to share about Les with his wife, kids and grandkids, please email it to edhknoch@gmail.com. Thank you for helping make 'new' memories of him. The family hopes to see anyone who knew him.
