New feature from CDC.gov offers update on Arctic FASD Regional Training Center

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. About 38 million U.S. adults drink too much alcohol. Excessive or risky alcohol consumption includes binge drinking, high weekly or daily use, and any use by pregnant women or those under age 21.

Alaska has one of the highest reported rates of binge drinking in the nation (e.g., in 2010, about 1 in 5 adults in Alaska reported binge drinking during the last 30 days).

In an effort to raise awareness about risky drinking and its effects, a new feature at CDC.gov highlights Alaska's efforts to implement alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in public health nursing clinics and includes additional resources on alcohol SBI for healthcare professionals.

The article offers an update on the Arctic FASD Regional Training Center, based at UAA and part of an initiative funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
