A series of Arctic science video programs begin on KAKM, Channel 7 on Wednesday, May 6 at 9 p.m. Episode Seven, appearing on Wednesday, June 10 at 9 p.m. will feature the work of UAA biology professor Loren Buck and an assisting graduate student, Cory Williams, and their recent work on hibernating ground squirrels.

Buck's work has gotten attention on Green and Gold News here and here, but this video story is the work of Frontier Scientist, a storytelling agency that aims to bring science to life by following real-life scientists and their work.

After watching a segment, viewers are invited to the Frontier Scientist website to explore these research topics in more detail and to pose questions directly to the scientists.

Here is the line-up of 10 programs; Buck's program is listed in red below.

  • Migration, May 6, 2015: Every year birds flock to Alaska. This migration lets them breed and feed in rich Arctic summer lands, but how do they cope with deadly and unpredictable Arctic weather? Scientists use creative techniques to find out.
  • Computational Science, May 11, 2015: Scientists use high-tech supercomputers to model and understand some of today's most complex issues.
  • Cook Inlet Volcanoes, May 20, 2015: Volcanologists and geologists explore volcanic activity along Cook Inlet from ancient istory to modern day, and even take a look at volcanoes from space.
  • Arctic Ground Squirrel, June 10, 2015: These cute furballs live unusual lives. They sruvive body temperatures below freezing and use a super-powered internalized clock to stay on schedule-scientists work to learn how.
  • Pilgrim Hot Springs, June 17, 2015: Geoghermal energy is the potential prize at Plgrim Hot Springs where tests and drilling help determine whether this resource can provide power to the city of Nome.
  • Cape Alitak Petroglyphs, June 24, 2015: Alongside crashing waves, archaeologists work to document the Kodiak Island petrolyphs, pre-historic Native rock art depicting mysterious faces of animals.
  • Denali grizzlies, July 3, 2013: Wildlife biologists and park rangers in Denali help the park's grizzly bear population thrive in their natural environment while promoting safe interactions between grizzlies and visitors.
  • Where is Lake El'gygytgyn?, July 15, 2015: 3.6 million years ago an asteroid impacted the earth in what we currently call Russia. Professor Julie Brigham-Grette and her team braved Siberian weather to extract earth cores from the site of the impact. This important depositional record represents 3.6 million years worth of data concerning our planet's climate history.
