Bal-aska is a four-day workshop focusing on development, education and preservation of Balboa, a vintage swing dance developed in Southern California during the 1920s. Focus is on influences as well as the dance itself. Audiovisuals include vintage movie clips used as tools to gain a better understanding of the dance. Professional guest instructors are brought into Anchorage for the class and rotated to work with students.

Multiple levels of instruction allow students to develop skills within a skill group. By end of the weekend, all students will be dancing Balboa and Bal-Swing. Open dancing to live jazz/swing bands adds to the experience and allows students to practice in a social setting what was learned in class.

Learn more and register at the UAA Continuing Education Department website. Full workshop passes are available at a student rate of $125 (all four days of classes, four nights of dancing and catered lunch on Saturday).

NOTE: Volunteers are needed act as door sitters and to refill water canisters as needed for the workshop participants and instructors. If interested, contact Roxanne Flores-Muller at rmfloresmuller@alaska.edu.
