Diversity in Higher Education: Responding to Recent Student Activism, Dec. 17

Thursday, Dec. 17, 10:30 a.m.-noon Student Union, Lyla Richards Conference Room

Widespread protests across our institutions are creating tremendous pressure on campus leaders-from all sides. Leaders face a strategic dilemma-inaction is not an option, and yet the urge to make quick and even bold commitments may force transactional "responses" to lists of "demands." This dynamic can prevent leaders from being more strategic and addressing the fundamental issues and concerns student groups are expressing.

Join us for a one-hour webcast and 30-minute discussion to hear about this subject from a national scholar and sitting cabinet member at Emory University. We'll explore a variety of questions, including:

  • What are the real systemic issues and how do you frame the conversation productively?
  • How do you navigate the nuances of freedom of speech, academic freedom and campus safety?
  • How can you engage all levels of university leadership in this discussion?
  • How do you maintain transparency and full disclosure when you don't have clear answers?
