UA Press releases 'Alaska's Greatest Outdoor Legends' and 'Little Whale'

by Michelle Saport  |

The University of Alaska Press announces two new releases: Alaska's Greatest Outdoor Legends: Colorful Characters Who Built the Fishing and Hunting Industries, by Doug Kelly, and Little Whale: A Story of the Last Tlingit War Canoe, by Roy A. Peratrovich Jr.

Alaska's Greatest Outdoor Legends depicts outstanding fishing and hunting guides, wilderness lodge pioneers, daring bush pilots, talented journalists, trailblazing biologists and others-doing so with a remarkable historical perspective combined with colorful anecdotes and new insights. Many of the images in the chapters, which were discovered in family archives, have never been published. Alaska's Greatest Outdoor Legends is certain to both entertain and serve as a treasured resource for all those intrigued by Alaska's history and outdoor lore.

In Little Whale, a 10-year-old Tlingit boy, Kéet, stows away for a voyage in his father's canoe and finds himself caught in the turbulent waters of an Alaska storm. Later, far from his home village-which would become modern-day Sitka-he ends up in the middle of a dangerous dispute between clans.

From the mists and shadows of Southeast Alaska, Peratrovich spins a timeless coming-of-age tale to captivate and educate readers of all ages. Into a true story passed down by his Tlingit grandfather, the author has woven his own fantasy. His illustrations draw the reader into a time long ago when the whims of nature and man brought about a boy's test of courage.

Peratrovich is a Tlingit from Southeast Alaska, where his parents were well-known Alaska Native civil rights leaders. He was the first Alaska Native to be registered as a professional civil engineer in Alaska. After retiring, he returned to his passion for art and established Ravenworks Art Studio.
