Nov. 5, 2016: Watch free screening of 'Song of the Phoenix' and enjoy a lecture on Chinese films

Chinese movie night: 'Song of the Phoenix' Saturday, Nov. 5, 3:30-6 p.m. Rasmuson Hall, Room 110

The UAA Confucius Institute would like to welcome you to a showing of the 2013 film "Song of the Phoenix," followed by a lecture, "Tianming Wu and His Films," presented by author, filmmaker and University of South Carolina Professor Dr. Tan Ye. This event is open to all, and includes free admission, parking and food.

The final film of award-winning director Tianming Wu, "Song of the Phoenix" follows the trials and tribulations of a traditional surnay musician in modern China. Nominated for four Golden Roosters, including Best Film and Best Actor, and featured in numerous international film festivals, "Song of the Phoenix" will be making its UAA premiere. Appropriate for all ages, "Song of the Phoenix" is in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Dr. Tan Ye, professor of comparative theater as well as director of the Chinese program and Confucius Institute at the University of South Carolina, is a leading authority on Chinese cinema and theater. He has published numerous books and essays exploring the history and theory of performance and filmmaking on the global stage. Dr. Ye has also played numerous behind-the-scenes roles in the production of nine Chinese feature and documentary films. He has also organized several conferences and film festivals devoted to Chinese cinema.

The Confucius Institute at UAA seeks to become an important center for the cultivation of Alaska-China relations, to provide expertise in Chinese language and culture training, and to serve as an important resource for our educational institutions. The UAA-CI mission has five folds: To promote understanding of Chinese language and culture; serve as regional center for Chinese teacher training and curriculum development; and to help address needs of the business community and the general public, while building connections and partnerships between Alaska and China.
