Philosophy Professor Raymond Anthony publishes guidelines for humane slaughter of livestock

by Michelle Saport  |

Raymond Anthony, professor of philosophy and member of UAA's Ethics Center, published The AVMA Guidelines for the Humane Slaughter of Animals with colleagues from the American Veterinary Medical Association. These guidelines provide an evaluation of methods, techniques, and agents used for killing hoofstock, poultry, rabbits, fish, and alligators designated to be used for food in accordance with the federal Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act. The "first-of-its-kind document addresses each stage of slaughter process," with special emphasis on pain prevention and distress in agricultural animals.

Professor Anthony is ethics advisor for the AVMA's Animal Welfare committee and also participated in the publication of the 2013 edition of the AVMA's Euthanasia Guidelines. He is currently serving on the Panel on Depopulation.
