Debating Alaska's Fiscal Future Scholarship Competition open through Jan. 15, 2017

UAA's Seawolf Debate Program has partnered with Atwood Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, Northrim Bank and GCI to present a scholarship competition that engages Alaska high school and college students in the conversation about Alaska's fiscal future.

$10,000 in scholarships are available, and entries are open now. For more information and to enter, go to debatingakfuture.com. Entries close on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017.

Students must choose a partner, then choose one of three controversial topics that have been selected, relating to Alaska's fiscal future. Together with their partner, students create a Pro and Con case and record a video of arguments for and against their topic. Those videos are then uploaded to our website for the public to view; the public will vote for the top teams who will be invited to participate in a live debate competition in Anchorage in April 2017. Travel, room and board will be covered for teams traveling from outside Anchorage. The live competition will be open to the public, and we will also provide for one chaperone to accompany entrants that are under 18.

Tell your friends, students, kids, or anyone who can get the word out to help amplify the voices of young Alaskans on this important topic. This contest help them build their skills, resumes, and possibly win scholarship money for their education. This is also a great opportunity for extra credit in classrooms, or to incorporate into learning objectives for all students.

More information for competitors, parents, and teachers is available on our website, debatingakfuture.com. This includes FAQs, contest rules, and other important information. On our website, there is a short course on "How to Debate" to help students get started, as well as an example video, and a selection research material for each topic. We look forward to hearing from the next generation of Alaskans on these important issues!
